Jo, what say you if MCDC start a small library for members to do some reference? So, for those of us who don't really need to get the whole book but need to desperately get some tips (not icing tips ehhh) can come to the library and view it, photocopy it... what-have-you... Of course the books cannot be taken out lah. Please, would you consider? - batting my short eyelashes the speed of a humming bird's wing Wink -

Hey Zarina (Inamohde, I am so used to calling your real name than nick) Razz Thanks for the great suggestion. However, there are a couple of 'technical' problems. First, MCDC is a virtual club although I do dream that we will have a small office one day Cool (non-profit organisation???) , where does the fund for buying books come from and where should the books be stored? Secondly, it does violate copyright to photocopy, no?

Btw, I like your avatar soooooooo much. How did you create that?

Hi ladies,

What we can do is have a book club. This is how it works:

We all have a lot of books. Some are so precious while others we don't mind sharing with other people. We can create a list online with all of our books and we can borrow from each other for a week or so. This way we can all benefit. What do you think?

Hey Ambika,

I think Essmat's idea is just brilliant! Yes, we definitely can have a virtual book club and we can meet once a week (or whatever frequency convenient), in any of the Wilton's office or any place convenient to meet! Thanks Essmat!

How can I not remember the dynamite mother and dotter duo? Of course I do remember you Ambika!!! Miss our frolicking in oily butter days (don't get any ideas everyone else...muahahahaha) We simply have to get together one day.

Jo, ooo.. you can call me Zarina or Inamohde or Ina or Contessa (read Barefoot Contessa's main competition... hahahahaha! AS IF!!!) And as for the avatar, I can make you one... with a body of a frumpy chef complete with smeared spatula to add to humor. All you have to do is send me your pic and wait for the avatar to be cooked in minutes. But you gotta admit, mine is very much like me.. body like guitar, skin like peeled egg..............wakakakakakakakak NOT!!

PS - I do take orders for funny avatars too... any takers?

I am a spender, I think Jo knows that Razz
I can't enough of buying everything especially Cake Deco books. My latest collection bought in November are : (not to mention the previous months)

Creating Wedding & Anniversary Cakes (bought pastry pro)
The Cake Decorator's Motif Bible (Kino Spore) - still wrapped
Fairytale Cakes 17 Enchanted Creation (kino Spore) - still wrapped

Love to read...read..and read.... And wish one day I can make them. So I really like the idea of Library so I can slow down on buying . I have to kinda hide them from my husband everytime new book come home.

Hi friends

I have books dating back 15years - techniques maybe outdated but really nice ideas, more than willing to share.

Smocking on sugarpaste was the vogue then - its like smocking on little girls dresses - never goes out of style.

Will post some pictures soon.

Re: MCDC Book Club, what say you?

Post by TraceyChooi on Wed Jun 17, 2009 6:52 pm

Hi everyone, I am resurrecting this topic after being inspired by Najat's book review and the ever present temptation of buying more and more cake decorating books but have to contend with a limited budget plus limited shelf space. It was mentioned in this thread some time last year that MCDC should start a library/book club, but this was not possible due to lack of funds then and lack of a physical office for MCDC.

Can I revisit this suggestion, and ask that we reconsider the idea which is brilliant? As reported by Jo, MCDC has about RM1,500 and this amount would definitely increase after the next meeting on 4 July. So, we should be able to afford a few books to start off the collection. The books can be kept/hosted by the administrator/moderators according to location. As an example, MCDC buys 3 books. Jo in Pantai Hillpark keeps Book1, Ina in Shah Alam Book2 and Najat in BU Book3. Members can go to any of the 3 to borrow any of the books, for a limited time of say 1 week. The books are also to be brought to each MCDC meet so that the moderators can exchange the book, and members can then borrow the books from the moderator closest to their location without travelling that far. We can work out the technical bits like whether a deposit is required, or whether a nominal rental sum is required etc. If it's not convenient for any of the moderators to be a book host, other members can volunteer - me... me... (hands up).

Once a member borrows the book, it is her responsibility to keep the book in good condition. It's up to her whether she wants to photocopy recipes etc. MCDC is not responsible for copyright issues. It's just like the normal library, it's not the library's concern as to whether their members photocopy anything.

So members, is this workable? I think it's very beneficial and we make good use of our funds too. What i've thrown out here is for discussion. I'm sure we can improve on it. What say you?
