Rose's Heavenly Cakes
I don't have The Cake Bible but when I saw this new book of Rose Levy Beranbaum at MPH 1 Utama recently I could not resist it.

Book details :-
Title Rose's Heavenly Cakes
Author Rose Levy Beranbaum
ISBN 978-0-471-78173-8
Hardcover and 2009 publication
Price at MPH was RM143.80
The book has 498 pages and the size is slightly wider than A4 in width, it weighs about 2kg in its hard cover form. The fonts used are not as 'old fashioned' as The Cake Bible's.
I find Rose's Rules of Cake Baking (3 pages) very useful though I doubt we can ever find Wondra flour or Land O'Lakes's butter in Malaysia.
The recipes are presented in 5 different categories - Butter and Oil cakes, Sponge cakes, Flourless and Cheesecakes, Baby cakes (incl cupcakes) and Wedding cakes. Each recipe comes with an anecdote or a short description of why they are what they are. This tells you the vast experience that Rose has accumulated during her work/travel around the globe and how she tweaked some of the original recipes to her liking .. (sounds like my kinda person ..
)
When I got the book my first instinct was to check on her chocolate ganache recipe. I was happy to find out that I have been doing the right stuff all along in that department. And I compared my all time favourite carrot cake recipe to Rose's and discovered that mine is similar to the Masterchef's ... that's a HUGE assurance to my small ego ...
I like these 2 pictures and will definitely try to find the time to make these cakes. The recipes are do-able with the ingredients available from the local shops.
The designs of the cakes attracted my attention actually ...

I have not finished poring over the book. There are so many tips to memorise and so many recipes to check against my already trusted ones.
But I can say it will be a pleasure to run through every single page and I'll let you know when I am done with all 498 of them ..
And I will post comments or pictures of cakes that I bake using recipes from the book.
Since I do not own The Cake Bible I do not know whether Rose repeated all her old recipes from TCB or created new ones. I did came across some that she said was in TCB. My guess is that she will have plenty of new recipes since TCB was published in 1988, a mere 21 years ago ...

Re: Rose's Heavenly Cakes
This is such a beautiful book, I'm still taking my own sweet time admiring the cake photos and reading the recipes. And I'm not even done with TCB yet as I also just got it recently. Well, just couldn't resist buying this book. Got it fr Book Depository at US$29.96.
Re: Rose's Heavenly Cakes
To an amateur like me, RLB really is a good master. I have the TCB now I am really itching for RHC. People like me who always wonder about chemical reaction and figuring out formulas, she's knows what she is talking about. I have heard it's more visually appealing than TCB! That helps a lot actually! Gonna get mine online too!

If anyone is looking for this book, MPH is out of stock. I managed to get my copy at Times at BSC. Made a trip there specially to buy it this morning. Think there is only 2 more copies left. If you are a Times member, you can get a 10% discount.

Re: Rose's Heavenly Cakes
Aaarrrggghhh Najat!!! I'm so jelaous!! I had it on pre-order at Amazon for the longest time (ever since I knew it was coming out) but somehow the order never went through. Besides it was too late for my daughter to bring back with her in August anyway.
I think I will just go ahead and order it from Book Despository. can't wait till Christmas!! I've made the Black Chocolate party cake (Yum! more adult taste than kids i.e. not sweet) and
her red velvet is good too (but gasp! I tweaked it a little bit
).
And I've had TCB for 16 years now, and still learn new things from it... A lot of the recipes are new; and any recipes that were covered in TCB are reworked so they are similar but also different. TCB was published 21 years ago! Lots of things have changed in the cake world since then
And as you said, this book has TONS of pictures!! Every cake has a photo I think. I'm dying to try out the baby grand lacquer glaze that's on the cover...it's super shiny!

Re: Rose's Heavenly Cakes
Yeah, apparently she got the recipe for the glaze from Japan, and worked with a chocolatier to perfect it. I don't think it sets hard, especially not in our weather, but it's so glossy looking that I won't care. The taste is supposed to be delicious too...well, with just cream and chocolate, plus gelatine I think, of course it would taste good.
You guys should check out her blog. One of the members there baked 3 different wedding cake previews from the new book and they look really gorgeous! with pics of the cut cake so you can see the texture.

I think Popular Bookstore is bring the TCB, Bread Bible, and somemore of Rose Levy Beranbaum's books, they're coming in a few months. Mebbe you can wait till then to buy ur cake bible instead of ordering from the internet.
