Re: Pirate cookies
TQ my dear friends for all the encouraging comments...
Cookie cutter???
They were all individually hand cut using a DIY template. What I did was this :
1. Photocopy a larger image of the actual one to the desired size,
2. Laminate the picture
3. Cut to shape
4. Place on dough and cut using a clean blade (I used the artist knife - the blade is smaller and narrower than the usual blades).
Wish I hv pix to show .. maybe later ...
So, basically you can do any cookie shape ... any size .. and it helps to hv a laminating machine at home ..:p ..
Actually not much of a story to tell .... the normal rantings of a Stay At Home Mom with two not so well children trying to be clever by trying out the Shiny Iced Cookie Recipe from Wilton that called for:
1 cup of icing sugar - sifted
2 tsp of milk
2 tsp of light corn syrup
This clever mother misread and put in 2 TABLESPOONS of milk instead ..but never mind .. used that to flood the cookies (only one cookie) ...Seemed to dry very nicely ..nice sheen .. plain white ..
Then decided to prepare a larger batch to ice all cookies ... 8 cups of sugar ... then tried it out .... very nice .. not brittle like Royal Icing. To get the right consistency for flooding the cookies, I had to add a considerable amount of Corn Syrup and I became very uneasy coz it was getting really sweet. Then, I was also uneasy with the thot that the cookies were only to be handed out to the kids on Sunday and the icing had milk in it ..Would it last??
Desicion, scrap shiny icing, feed it to the sink and prepare the usual RI. Lethargy started creeping in ... some cookies were soft in the middle ..popped them in the oven for a few minutes ... done. Took a breather ..a long one. Waited for DH to come back to take over looking after kids.
Started icing after 7pm ... it rained heavily and it took a longer time to dry .. .. I only did 40 pcs. By the time I finished packing and cleaning up .. it was already 5am ...
Tedious but I enjoyed doing it ... kinda crazy things we do ... and u know what kept me going that morning .... seeing that there were other MCDCians awake and online at the wee hours of the morning, maybe doing things that I was doing
... Najat was awake at 3am and did not go to sleep, Mama Min was awake at 6am(maybe earler) and some other friends, too ..Haishhhhh .... yes, I had my netbook with me all that time to keep my sanity ...
Thank you, people ...

Re: Pirate cookies
Your cookies are well worth the waking hours Lyza. They are cute and gave me ideas for some new ones for me to try.
On the waking hours note - while I do wake up early or sleep late to make my orders I do make sure that I have no orders the next day or I recover the sleep before the next order comes in.
Your body is your temple so take care of it.

Re: Pirate cookies
Wow, well worth the time spent! I think when doing things we enjoy we tend to forget the time (once I prepared my cake till 3am, sleep for few hours and woke up early morning again to continue...).

Re: Pirate cookies
Beautiful, Lyza! The final result shows you put your heart & soul into those cookies.
So your verdict is the Wilton shiny icing not worth the effort huh? Have you tried using a stand fan to blow dry your flooding icing? I find that work with fondant figures and cookies with RI
