Re: Good baking classes
hi jennifer
i could tell you that i run a series of baking classes, cakes n breads but think bangi might be another world for you!
i have been to a taylor's one , n they run a very good professional culinary program, including pastry ones (for part timers) which covers from cakes to pastries! cant remember the link offhand, but x out taylor college website.

Re: Good baking classes
In my limited knowledge, i suggest Cake Connection, Jaya 1, PJ. Well run classes covering a few different subjects. Not cheap though........
Also Best Baking in USJ hold classes, no website though, would have to call to enquire.
Btw, Welcome.

Re: Good baking classes
Bake With Yen in Puchong offers classes as well, but they have temporarily ceased conducting the classes until after Raya. Do shop around and compare the syllabus & fees. Check out their website.

Re: Good baking classes
In my personal opinion, BWY cake decorating classes are good for the real beginners who arent sure whether they want to pursue cake decorating seriously or for those with budget constraints since their fees are generally cheaper compared to elsewhere. Dont expect any ambience or cozy kitchen classroom since the fees have discounted those factors. Iis not the place to learn the more advance or finer points of cake decorating but good enough for you to start off assuming you know zilch. Their target market is more of the middle working class ppl & homemakers. Response to their classes is good as most of their classes easily exceeds 12 students. Do take note that some of the cheaper classes are demo only & not hands on.

Re: Good baking classes
Hi Ladies,
Let me share with you my 2 cents worth with regard to BAKE WITH YEN's classes in Puchong.
I have attended ONE (because I wanted to learn the MOULTEN CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES) of them and i swore that will be my LAST!
My belief is that if you aim to be the BEST in what we do, (at least we try), we must learn from the BEST TEACHERS. My observations are:-
1. Environment is NOT conducive for learning. Its on the border of being dirty.
2. Instructor only can communicate in Bahasa Malaysia. His English is limited though he is willing to share his knowledge.
3. Methods used are crude and the flowers he piped showed the same results.
4. Colours are really mind boggling. If you care to check out what they are selling in BWY Puchong, you will understand what I meant.
Certainly do not recommend BWY for classes even if its for FREE.

Re: Good baking classes
This is a great link to share what goes on in classes by different retailers. I'll give a gist on what Wah Seng in Ipoh has to offer.
Wah Seng is the biggest cake ingredient retailer in Ipoh, it also supplies frozen food to Ipoh hotel...example if you want to order a whole lamb to be barbequed on a spit, they have it.
Classes includes baking, cake decorating, pau making, sushi making, pizza making, western food cooking...etc.
Opening hours are Mon-Sat 8:30am-6:00pm. Classes are scheduled on Saturdays as Sunday is their off day. No classes on weekdays. Capacity for demos average 40. Hands-on 24. No website info...schedules are posted at the cashier. Classes are always full. Instructors range form old-time experts like Grace to newbies like me, and also brand representatives.
Anyone and everyone who has something (especially new things) to demo or teach are most welcome to bring variety to Wah Seng's big group of loyal customers. I know of customers who attend almost every class from Wilton to sushi-making and pau demos. Its almost like a community gathering.

Re: Good baking classes
Margaret, you are far too advance to attend BWY classes. You are at the 'instructor' level, not student standard laa!!!

Re: Good baking classes
Hi Yen Lee, no I have not reached that level yet. But to elaborate on Nuraini's comments, Grace too have classes in Kepong. She can be reached on 03.62771977.
What I like about Grace is that she teaches you the lesson and you must re-produce the same thing the following week. I am not sure how much she charges now but hers is the BASIC icing techniques you can learn.
Another great teacher is PAMELA JONES who has 40 years of baking experience. If you ladies recall, she has appeared several times in the local media.
Her BUTTER CAKES WITH BUTTER ICING is only for RM 500.00 for 5 lessons over 5 weeks (see details below).
1. Orange butter cake WINNIE THE POOH
2. Butter cake - 21st KEY piping of roses and fillers
3. Chocolate cake - choco train
4. Sugee cake - HEART SHAPED CHOCOLATE BOX
5. Marble cake - DOLL IN THE GARDEN
Its not exactly HANDS ON but you can actually "help" out during the lessons. The lessons are held at her home in HAPPY GARDENS and I must tell you, her cakes are really really nice.
At the end of the 5 lessons, you learned some great cake recipes and also some very basic decorating skills.
Pam can be reached at 017.6393857 or her home no. 03.79815179.
Don't worry, I do not work for either Grace or Pam but a no. of our members of MCDC also started off with them.
Go for it ladies. You will not have any regrets. Also I must mention that after every lesson with Pam, you get to bring home a delicious cake to share with the family.
have fun.
